Weeks was one of the first missionaries in the Congo - arriving only two years after H.M. Stanley in 1881. A prolific author, he is probably best known for the active role he played in the denunciation of King Leopold’s regime. This work is a pioneering example of ethnography in the Congo. Not for the faint-hearted, two of the illustrations depict different methods of beheading. Hosken, pp 214-5.
