Facsimile of a notebook of 55 sketches by Jonas, reproduced here in black and white; the endpapers list the titles of the sketches. One of a total of 300 copies, of which 200 were in black and white. Initialed by the artist on publisher’s ticket to lower pastedown. Small folio. Original beige cloth, a few small stains and light discolouration around edges, a few leaves a little rubbed. Inner joints spit but holding on cords. Paris, Librairie Doron-Ainé, 1915.

The French painter Lucien Jonas (1880-1947), “attaché au Musée de l’Armée”, was one of the most prolific military artists of World War I. He served for most of the war on the front lines and produced countless portraits of soldiers as well as landscapes of military scenes.

The present facsimile of his work comprises, among other reproductions: 9 portraits of English soldiers; 24 portraits of soldiers serving “chez les Indiens” (only a few of the portraits depict Indian soldiers); and 8 portraits of military interpreters.
