Beaumaris
Beaumaris Castle; Great Hall, Beaumaris Castle
Two plates; one depicting the main gate of the castle, the other the Great Hall.
Beaumaris was the last of Edward I’s great ‘Iron Ring’ of fortifications built with the hope of finally suppressing the Welsh. Although unfinished, Edward was to run out of money, the castle is still regarded at the architect’s, James of St George, masterpiece. It was the largest that he ever built, containing nn less than four concentric walls.
