CARTER (Angela).

The Bloody Chamber.

From the library of Angela Carter, inscribed to her by Auberon Waugh.

First edition. 8vo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, dust jacket. London, Gollancz, 1979.

£850.00

From the library of Angela Carter, with her bookplate to the front paste down, and with an amusing inscription from Auberon Waugh to Carter, containing a hint to the unusual printing flaw in this copy: “For Angela Carter with love from Auberon Waugh see pp. 95 - 122 A reminder of the Chaos”.

Waugh was writing for the Evening Standard at the time, and had been sent a review copy. Waugh gave a particularly glowing review to her retelling of “Puss in Boots” which in this copy is cut short: what would have been pages 96 - 128 are absent and in their place are pages 91 - 122 of Emma Lathen’s Banking on Death. A clear binding error which offers a tantalising glimpse into the referred to “chaos” surrounding the publication of Carter’s best known book.

A fine copy.
