Vandeleur was gazetted Scots Guards in 1889, and promoted Captain and Major in 1898. He saw Special Service in Uganda in 1894, the Unyoro Expedition and Dufile, Nile, 1895-6. He saw service with the Niger Sudan Expedition, 1897 - MiD, DSO - and with the Egyptian Army at Atbara and Omdurman, where wounded serving with the 9th Sudanese Btn.
