CARNAP (Rudolf).
On the Character of Philosophic Problems.
CARNAP'S FIRST PUBLICATION IN ENGLISH
Carnap’s first publication in English, appearing in the first ever issue of the influential journal Philosophy of Science and preceding the publication of his first book in English, The Unity of Science, later the same year.
The article outlines Carnap’s views on the role that philosophy can play in the development and progress of science, responding directly to Wittgenstein’s famous challenge in the Tractatus ‘Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent’ with his own theory of the logical syntax of language.
Carnap published two further articles in American journals later in 1934 which, together with the publication of The Unity of Science, did much to establish his international reputation and laid the grounds for his emigrating to the United States the following year.
