Senior (1790-1864) was an English lawyer, economist, and also a government adviser in the areas of economic and social policy. The contents relate to conversations during a visit that occurred from November 1855 to April 1856 and provide fascinating insight into many of the major, influential figures of the day, with whom Senior was on close terms.
Mary Charlotte Mair Simpson (1825-1907), a memoirist, acted as her father’s literary executor.

Senior had been invited by de Lesseps to become one of the international commissioners who were to examine the canal plans and pronounce on their practicability. The Commission visited Egypt in 1855-56. Nassau kept extensive journals in which he recorded his conversations with eminent statesmen…”
