A satirical account of the important 1844 Birmingham by-election presented in the style of a racing report.
Richard Spooner is here characterised as Sir John Candour who “took a most satisfactory gallop yesterday” pitted against William Schofield (or “Basewig”) and Joseph Sturge (“‘Mr. Sleekface’s Dun Horse Broad Brim“). Spooner won with over 2000 votes and became the first Conservative to represent Birmingham. Jacob Wilson, referred to as the “clerk of the course” was the famous Birmingham town crier.
