Full green goatskin binding with geometric designs of triple gilt fillets and rules to upper and lower covers, spines with five raised bands and 7 gilt ruled compartments, three of which are lettered in gilt, elaborate turn-ins tooled with gilt leaf sprays with red and brown onlay, binder's signature 'Tregaskis Caxton Head' at tail, vellum doublures decorated in gilt, vellum endpapers. London, Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co, 1895.

£3,000.00

Very good, spines faded to brown, covers with inoffensive scuffs, extremities rubbed, spotting to foredge.

An important survey of British and ‘foreign’ bookbindings in the British Museum, in a binding demonstrating both restraint in the plain geometric rules of the covers and extravagant luxury in the highly decorated turn-ins and doublures. A fitting celebration for one of the greatest collections of bookbindings.
