[BRITISH NATIONAL ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 1901-1904].
Engraved fork from relief ship SY Morning.

An artefact from the wardroom of SY Morning. This piece of engraved flatware would have been used at table by the officers of the ship whilst sailing in Antarctic waters as part of the British National Antarctic Expedition.

Morning served as the relief ship for Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery, providing two much needed restocks to the men stationed at McMurdo Sound, preparing for their attempt on the South Pole. Morning was also the ship on which Sir Ernest Shackleton was invalided off Antarctica following a debilitating bout of scurvy.

Under the captaincy of William Colbeck, the Morning also discovered two previously uncharted Antarctic islands, on Christmas Day 1902.
