This is fittingly the core of the project and essentially provides the extensive nuance that Nabokov believed translation alone could not facilitate. A facsimile of the 1837 Russian edition, the last published in Pushkin’s lifetime, makes up Volume 4.

The publication of this work led to a public feud between Nabokov and literary critic friend Edmund Wilson. In the initial review, published in the New York Review of Books, Wilson wrote that “This production, though in certain ways valuable, is something of a disappointment.” Commenting on the perhaps intentional literality of Nabokov’s translation, he continues, “To inflict on the reader such words is not really to translate at all, for it is not to write idiomatic and recognizable English.”

Despite this, the analysis of Volumes 2 and 3 constitute a scholarly effort to illuminate in its entirety the nuance of Pushkin’s prose, and the significant gaps that translation itself cannot fill.

This set is in Juliar’s second state.
