TERRY Ellen
Five Autograph Postcards, comprising one letter, signed once ("Ellen Carew"),
Written later in the year Terry married the American actor, James Carew, she describes the newlyweds as having a most convivial time: “We are busy studying new parts, busy reading, writing, motoring, talking & laughing.” She writes to Molly Morrison on a series of five postcards illustrating the various sights of Caen - two churches, one square, one chateau, and the theatre. As she writes on the first of the series, “This is the square we are staying in”, adding, “It’s my turn now to send you some pics.”
She appears to quote George Bernard Shaw’s 1893 play Mrs Warren’s Profession: “I hope you are very well dear Molly “as this leaves us at present””, demonstrating the actor’s skill of always having a suitable quote to hand. Molly, whose full name is Rose Margaret Morrison, was the daughter of friends of Terry’s. She mentions how, she “had hoped to run in to see your mother - see you all - before I left London, only I was very tired & rather ill!” Thankfully she is “all right now” and enjoying her time in Caen with her new husband. She wishes Molly “A Merry (but judicious!) Xmas” and offers some advice: “Don’t spoil your pleasant appearance by going to too many parties, sitting up too late, dancing too much”, adding, perhaps tongue-in-cheek afterthought, “it’s none of it worth while.”
Some marking and age toning.
