The author’s copy, with his bookplate and ownership inscription, marked up for the second edition. The corrections include the deletion of the dedication “To John and Evelyn”, the choice of a variant reading for the epigraph (from “Do ye ken John Peel”), many literals, and several authorial revisions, usually the tidying up of a phrase or the substitution of a single word. The most substantial is the revision of the last sentence of chapter 8, where a new ending, of some twenty words, is inserted.
