DENNIS W. SCIAMA'S COPY

First edition. 8vo. xviii, 919, [1] pp. Original yellow cloth, spine lettered in gilt on green ground, dust jacket (small stain to fore-edge of text block, contents otherwise clean and unmarked; only minor creasing to extremities of jacket, otherwise a very good copy indeed). Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1979.

£175.00

A collection of essays centring around Einstein’s general theory of relativity by leading theoretical physicists of the day, including contributions by Steven Hawking, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Steven Weinberg, among others.

A nice association copy, from the library the British physicist Dennis W. Sciama (1926-1999), with his ownership inscription in blue ink to the front free endpaper. Sciama is best-known for his contributions to the fields of astrophysics and cosmology as well for having supervised Stephen Hawking’s doctorate thesis on Properties of Expanding Universes (1966).
