An attractively illustrated popular history of the Middle East, with a focus on the Arabian Peninsula. The author provides a sketch of Arabian history, with chapters on the pre-Islamic period, the life of Muhammad and the Muslim Conquests. Other chapters cover aspects of Arabia in the nineteenth century, describing affairs in the Hejaz and the Persian Gulf (including the British expeditions against the Al Qasimi in 1809 and 1819, pp.172-177) and the history of Wahhabism.
