[CONNOLLY (Cyril)].
Horizon. A Review of Literature & Art. Vol. I. No. 1.
Inscribed by Connolly, “with the editor’s compliments”, and inscribed again on the title page to Blakiston: “Noel from Cyril, Cuando sovviemmi!”. With the subscription flier loosely inserted. The inscription refers back to the epigraph chosen for Enemies of Promise, “Quando sovviemmi di conta speme When I recall so much hope”, from Giacomo Leopardi’s poem, ‘To Sylvia’. The first issue of Horizon, with a cover design by John Piper and the Henry Moore drawing on page four, with further contributions from W.H. Auden, H.E. Bates, John Betjeman, Walter de la Mare, Louis MacNeice, J.B. Priestley, Frederic Prokosch, Geoffrey Grigson and Stephen Spender. This first issue was sold out within a week of publication and it appeared monthly throughout the war, continuing until November 1949. Stained on corner of lower cover, otherwise an excellent copy in a protective folding box.
