by Sir H. Frank Heath and A.L. Hetherington. Lavishly illustrated. 8vo., contemporary black crushed morocco, covers decorated with a broad inner border of an arabesque floral tool, within a panel of four gilt rules and a narrow dot and line roll tool. Spine lettered in two panels with an allover gilt decoration in the other panels and a small avian tool at the foot. Doublures with two bands of roll-tooled decoration, with lettering between them, at the front reading “THIS BOOK HAS BEEN TOOLED WITH THE TOOLS USED BY THE LATE F.P.M. SCHILLER, K.C.” and at the rear reading “BOUND FOR A.L. HETHERINGTON BY W.F. MATTHEWS.” London, Faber & Faber, 1946.
Hetherington was a librarian and writer on ceramics, who was presumably called in on this project as a professional writer to help Sir Frank Heath, who was principally an educationalist who sought to bridge the gap between science and industry. It is tempting to use the text as a diagnostic tool in research for the collapse of British post-war manufacturing.
