The Academie de France desptached two scientific expeditions in 1735, one to the Arctic and one to the Equator, in order to take measurements which would enable a more exact calculation of the earth’s circumference. La Condamine travelled to South America with fellow scientists Bouger and Godin, using Quito as their base, since it sits on the Equator.
