With some nineteenth century ephemera relating to the author: a page of notes with a photograph of a portrait of the author verso bound in as the front free endpaper; one page of notes on the author’s ancestry loosely inserted; an engraved portrait of Wheler’s grandson, Granville Sharp, loosely inserted; and a letter concerning the work mounted to lower pastedown. The letter would indicated that the book was owned by a descendant of Wheler, as the writer notes “your ancestor’s account of Constantinople…”.
Blackmer states that this work was “the standard English book on Greece for many years” (Blackmer 1786). Importantly, Wheler’s account includes an engraving of the Parthenon before it was damaged in 1687 during the Morean War.
