Stevenson’s classic adventure story. ‘Making skilful use of Scots it brilliantly evokes the atmosphere of Scotland in the period following the 1745 Jacobite rising and explores the differences between lowland and highland mentality in the contrasting characters of David Balfour and Alan Breck’ (ODNB).

The second issue of the first edition, with the relevant corrections made to pp. 40, 64 and 101, a slight variant of Beinecke 3381 and 382 with only four leaves of adverts dated 5G - 7.86. The sheets of the first edition were bound up in blue, green, red or brown cloth (without priority) with the publisher’s imprint in gilt at the foot of spine.

W.H. Smith booksellers blind stamp to front free endpaper, tiny pin hole to blank upper margin of title page and adjacent leaf, not effecting text, contents otherwise generally clean, binding slightly tilted and with very slight wear to the ends, but hinges and text remain very tight. A very good copy overall.
