Inscribed by the author to his friend Henry Russell, “à Henry Russel [sic], Bien affectueux souvenir, Maeterlinck”. Russell was an English impresario who became Maeterlink’s closest friend. In 1911, he persuaded Maeterlink and Claude Debussy to write ‘Pelleas et Melisande’ together, which he produced. He failed, however, to persuade them to come to the US for the production, so he “informed reporters that the author might have arranged to travel incognito … and alleged that he had bet Maeterlink he could not land without being spotted by journalists. These stunts assured that all seats for the opening night were sold” (Halls). Spine faded and torn at head and tail, wrappers slightly soiled, otherwise a very good copy.
