VERCORS (Pseudonym of Jean Bruller).
Le Silence de la Mer.
Inscribed by the author: “a Monsieur Roland Gaillard, hommage de Vercors.” Bruller, writer, illustrator and member of the French Resistance, co-founded the publishing house Les Editions de Minuit in 1941 as a clandestine operation. This was the first text from the press, and was reprinted several times, becoming the most well-known literary symbol of resistance. Cyril Connolly translated it into English as “Put out the Light.”
