The author was the son of a Dinon hatter, and a member of both the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres (1738) and the Académie française (1747) of which he became secretary. A man of spirit and of some talent, he wrote various historical works and several romans, one Acajou et Zirphile (1744) illustrated by Boucher. This present work was first published in 1741 and several times reprinted. The plate at part 1 page 10 has the page number included which may possibly indicate a reprint (see the note by Cohen).

The Parisian binder Georges Frederic Canapé (1864-1940) took over the business of his father in 1894 and retired in 1937.
