Within a short time of reaching the Southern States Stirling came to the conclusion that the difference between the North and South lay in the fact that the former was Democratic whilst the latter was Aristocratic. It was an opinion to which he held fast for the remainder of his tour, indeed his comparisons between America and his Scottish homeland are equally unfavourable. However, his somewhat opinionated narrative demonstrates a keen eye and is both detailed and amusing. Sabin, 91845; Howes, S1012; Clark (Travels in the Old South) III, 498.
