DEFOE (Daniel).
The Life and Most Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, or York, Mariner.

Rare. ESTC records BL and Congregational Library only in the UK; Morgan Library and Pennsylvania only in the USA. OCLC adds copies at Pittsburgh and Chicago. The title-page is a cancel, most likely a re-issue of the sheets of the 1779 Paris edition also published by Stoupe (ESTC records BL and Columbia University). Based on Thomas Gent’s abridgement first published in 1722.

A neat pocket-sized edition English language edition of Robinson Crusoe published in Paris. With the printed booksellers label of Matthias Fontaine on the front pastedown.

A small edition no doubt intended for French readers learning English as well as English tourists travelling on the Continent.

Provenance: Contemporary printed bookseller and publishers label of the French-German bookseller Matthias Fontaine (1749-1818). The label explains, in French, that Fontaine, “supplies not only the books contained in his catalogue, but also the old works not included therein, and all the new releases, at a fairer price.”
