This play was first acted in 1903, at which time Maugham had about 150 copies printed up (by Chapman & Hall) for rehearsals and to give out on opening night; it also appeared then as a supplement of the fortnightly review (also published by C&H). It was not until December 1911 (dated 1912) that this trade edition was published. This copy, in the original wrappers, is in excellent condition (one tear in the rear/spine wrapper, bottom left corner slightly crumpled, and a small slightly-darkened square on the front cover where a price sticker may once have resided).
