A Map of the Shooting Districts Lying Between Shanghai and Wuhu.

Henling Thomas Wade (1846-1915) was an avid sportsman and one of the founding members of the Shanghai Paper Hunt Club. Robert Alexis de Villard (1860-1904) was an English clerk at the Imperial Maritime Customs. He had been trained as a cartographer and achieved fame as the first designer of postage stamps in China. He also published the large format “Map of the Yangtse-Kiang” in 1895.

The present large-scale map extends all the way from Hangzhou in the South to Nanjing in the Northwest, more than you could expect to cover on a horse in a day or even a week. It prominently features the Grand Canal (from Zhenjiang to Hangzhou), various tea and rice-growing districts and it is fair to say that the map was used as much for military and business purposes as it was for organising shooting parties. Swamps and marshes, which are good hunting grounds for ducks, are highlighted in green.

The 1898 edition is predated by one printed in 1893 and 1896. Includes a booklet with distance tables in English miles and Chinese li. Rare.
