He was appointed Chief of Artillery of the Northern Army and served with distinction on the Niagara frontier and defense of Fort Erie. In 1815, he was sent to Europe to inspect their military schools and after retiring from the army became a surveyor of public land in Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas. Fort McRee at Pensacola, Florida is named after him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn addition to this biographical account, the text reprints contemporary notices concerning his military services as well as posthumous material. Indeed, the author quotes a letter from General Joseph Swift to him, which includes the following:“\u003cstrong\u003eGeneral Brown has often said to me that he esteemed Col. McRee to be the most accomplished military man in the Army, and that he (Gen.
