Momikarakami [Kneaded papers]
A privately printed book on highly specialised washi
A privately printed publication dedicated to momi-kara washi, a type of kneaded handmade paper. The book contains ten original paper samples, alongside beautiful photographic plates showing the many processes it takes to achieve the crinkled effect of this type of Japanese paper.
Momi-kara paper, or simply, momi-kami is a type of paper-making which involves applying multiple layers of pigments to the paper, so that when the paper is kneaded the crinkles reveal the layers of pigment. This type of traditional paper-making was named by Shiga prefecture as an Intangible Cultural Heritage (mukei bunka-zai).
