The author describes herself as “je suis épouse \u0026amp; mere, \u0026amp; que mes enfants sont des garçons” and notes that this cheaply produced pamphlet can be bought, “chez l’auteur rue des Poitevins, No. 20.” This pamphlet was printed by “la Veuve Delaguette”, Marie-Catherine Delaguette, a female printer and publisher.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis pamphlet, addressed to the National Assembly, was written at the height of the French Revolution in a period when censorship of the press was removed allowing a flurry of petitioning pamphlets such as this to appear championing the rights of the oppressed in the hope of igniting the tumultuous political situation and forcing further change. The present publication is a very personal plea written - as the author states in a footnote - by a mother and wife and available directly from her (“priced 6 sols”) at her home in Paris. The work is anonymous but Madame Mouret wrote in the \u003cem\u003eAnnales de l’éducation\u003c\/em\u003e a year after the publication:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Nous nous faisons un plaisir \u0026amp; même un devoir de rendre compte d’une brochure in-12, intitulée: Motions Adressées a l’Assemblée Nationale en Faveur du Sexe. L’Auteur a gardé l’anonyme; mais nous savons que c’est madame Bastille, à qui nous devons la Bibliotheque des Romans…” [We take pleasure - and indeed consider it a duty - to review a duodecimo pamphlet titled: Motions Addressed to the National Assembly in Favour of the Fair Sex. The author has remained anonymous, but we know it to be Madame Bastiie, to whom we owe the Bibliothequue des Romans.] - Mouret (Madame), \u003cem\u003eAnnales de l’éducation du sexe, ou Journal des demoiselles\u003c\/em\u003e, Vol II (1790) p.35-6).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe author states that men have forced women into an unjust subservient position in society and suggests that dowries be abolished so that men might be more likely to choose a partner they cared for rather than as a lucrative business transaction:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e“Depuis le sceptre jusqu’à la houlette pourquoi les femmes nées pour répandre des fleurs sur la privée de l’homme, ne reçoivent - elles de lui en rêcompense, que des fers, des tourments, et des injustices?” [From the sceprte to the shepherd’s crook - why do women born to strew flowers upon man’s path, receive from him in return nothing but chains, torment, and injustice?] (p.3).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe author goes on to state that religious houses for nuns are too strict and that women should be able to leave freely. She argues that young women are often forced to enter religious orders ( described as “sombres asyles”) when they are too young to freely make the decision themselves and then become trapped until they are old enough to free themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe publisher, “la Veuve Delaguette” is Marie-Catherine Delaguette (neé Knapen) who was born in 1752 the daughter of a Paris printer and bookseller and married at sixteen, Pierre-Méri Delaguette in 1768. After the death of her husband in 1788 Marie-Catherine operated the business herself until around 1812 when her son succeeded her.
