among the Baralong tribe of Bechuanas, South Africa.First edition. Small 8vo. Original plum cloth, spine sunned, bookplate to front pastedown. 204pp. London, Wesleyan Mission House, 1865.
Broadbent left the Cape in 1821, heading to mostly unknown territory. He eventually settled in Maquassi, where Siffonello (Chief of the Baralongs) resided. Despite constant warfare, the Mission managed to remain on good terms with the Bechuanas, not least because of Broadbent’s efforts to master the local language. Mendelssohn I, p192.
