Having obtained his diploma as surgeon, Wilde travelled on board the 130 ton yacht Crusader as doctor to the invalid owner Mr. Robert Meiklam to whom the volumes are dedicated, and who produced the sketches for the plates. Sir William Robert Wills Wilde was the father of Oscar Wilde.

Blackmer 1795: “Most of volume I is devoted to North Africa, including Egypt. Volume II describes Egypt, Palestine and Asia Minor. Only the last chapter is on Greece.”
