CONRAD (Joseph).
The Nigger of the "Narcissus". A Tale of the Sea.
The binding is in Cagle’s state (b), one of two which seem to have been used indiscriminately and seem to have no priority: the advertisements are a variant not noted by him, with the 16 page of publishers’ advertisements dated 1897 (the earlier of two types) following a four page insert. The American edition takes precedence over the English, where it was published as The Children of the Sea, a marketing decision based not on sensitivity but because people wouldn’t buy books about black people.
An excellent copy, near fine, with just a very slight wear to the joints.
