Inscribed by the author ‘with best wishes Dick’ in black ink to the title, with an additional pencilled notation by Hare ‘to be published 21st March’. Not identified as such, but from the library of the American-born Oxford philosopher James P. Griffin (1933-2019).
A collection of essays by the celebrated Oxford moral philosopher R.M. Hare, published only three years before his death in 2001. Of Hare, Allan Gibbard remarked: “Perhaps no philosopher since Kant has developed a theory of moral judgement and moral reasoning so ingenious and so carefully worked through as R.M. Hare” (quoted in Biographical Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Moral Philosophers).
