KIPLING (Rudyard).
The Phantom 'Rickshaw and Other Tales.

The true first edition of this collection of four short stories. In his short introduction Kipling acknowledges that these aren’t exactly “downright ghost stories … rather a collection of facts that never quite explained themselves”. The stories are the titular one, “My own true Ghost Story”, “The Strange Ride of Morrowby Jukes”, and “The Man who would be King.”

The variant of the wrapper with punctuation in the title to front cover: it’s not clear how these different states came into being, nor whether either has precedence, but Richards does note that a presentation copy inscribed in February 1889 has wrappers in this current state.

With some early repairs to the spine, a closed tear on the front cover, and a small triangular chip from the rear wrapper, but a very good copy indeed.
