The chart was announced in the Nautical Magazine, with an article giving sailing directions for the island, and an anecdote attached: “The Bonin Islands are at present inhabited; at least so Captain James informs us; but two persons only were found at Port Lloyd when Captain Beechey was there, and these had belonged to a whaler, the William, of London, wrecked there some time before his arrival. These two men were so pleased with the islands, that they were left there at their own request by the rest of the vessel’s crew, who had constructed a boat with which they proceeded to Manilla. …”
