Chanteuse légère

A dazzling gold silk broadside produced by one of the first Vietnamese private printing companies in Saigon, Imprimerie Rey et Curiol.

In the late 1870s the French colonial administrators of the Cochinchina region started to allow private printing companies to operate in the area – previously the government-run press had had a monopoly, but administrative and funding issues meant that the press could not run effectively to meet demand. Though they have been founded in 1868, Imprimerie Rey et Curiol only started to operate in the Cochinchina area after privately owned companies were allowed. They operated under this name until 1898, after which the company changed names and ownership a number of times.

The broadside itself is printed onto gild silk, which has a hand-painted pictorial border. The border was painted onto the silk before the text was printed (as the blank ink in some places sits on top of the white paint). The broadside itself appears to be a keepsake for a performance that took place at the Théatre de Saigon on the 27th February 1890. It outlines a lively performance by Mlle Lucie Duchateau, including a performance of the opera La Triviata.

Unrecorded.

Ref: Duong Thanh Thong, ‘Printing and publishing in Saigon-Cho Lon, Vietnam: Catalysts of colonial social and cultural transformation’ in Journal of Infrastructure, Policy and Development 8.11 (2024).

https://store.maggs.com/products/representation-extraordinaire-de-benefice-de-mlle-lucie-duchateau-v1w6kipz
