Brackenbury was selected by Wolseley for the Gordon Relief Expedition. He was appointed Assistant Adjutant and Quarter-Master General at Cairo in September 1884, and in December 1884 joined Wolseley at Korti being made second in command on the River Column. With the death of General Earle in February 1885 Brackenbury assumed command. This, his account is uncommon.
