First edition. 12 photographic plates. 8vo. Original flexible boards, minor wear to spine, occasional light foxing, but overall still a very good copy. 79pp. London, Church of England Zenana Missionary Society, 1900.
A rare booklet published by the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society (CEZMS) efforts in Fujian Province. The name “Zenana” refers to the practice of female missionaries visiting women in their homes, an important method in cultures where women lived largely secluded. It involved developing a network of local Chinese women who served as go-betweens in proselytising and intercultural communication. In Fujian the CEZMS were also involved in setting up homes and churches for lepers. Uncommon.
