EBERHART (Richard).

Song and Idea.

First edition. Tall 8vo., original ochre cloth-backed patterned boards. London, Chatto & Windus, 1940.

£90.00

Inscribed by the author to Trekkie and Ian Parsons, his editor at Chatto: “For Trekkie and Ian with love and affection at your home, in high summer, 1973. Richard”. Eberhart sent a manuscript of Song and Idea to Parsons in January 1940, just before Parsons left for France with the RAF. In March Parsons’ partner at Chatto, Harold Raymond, passed on his comments, written on a train in France: “I’ve read and re-read them and soaked myself in them these last few weeks, and I can’t tell you how much pleasure I’ve had from them. To read contemporary poetry that is so fresh and vital and original is exhilarating at any time, but now it’s more than usually stimulating and refreshing. I really am grateful and full of admiration.” An excellent copy, some fading to the spine.
