Signed on the front-free endpaper by the author, above the signature is a hand-drawn bar of musical notation with the lyrics ‘Ave Maria gratia plena’ below. Santley, considered by some to be the greatest English opera singer of the Victorian period, also wrote books on vocal technique and two sets of memoirs.
