FORD (Gerald).
A Time to Heal.

Inscribed on the half-title, “To John Bryant, in appreciation of your many kindnesses and superb support. With warmest best wishes, Gerald R. Ford. 5/28/79”.

The autobiography of the 38th President of the United States. Per the blurb on the dustjacket flap, “This is a refreshingly unpretentious yet vivid book. Jerry Ford simply tells it as it was: the journey from modest Midwestern beginnings to the White House - the tough choices, the personal sacrifices, the joys of success, the mistakes, the rousing partisan battles […] It is a dramatic, forthright and firsthand account of a decent man’s efforts to knit together a nation fragmented by Watergate […] Readers of A Time to Heal will come to know Gerald Ford as, until now, only his intimate friends and family have known him.”

Dustjacket dated June 1979, the inscription being from May, indicating an advance copy. John Bryant is possibly the husband of Barbara Bryant, the first woman to lead the U.S. Census Bureau. Barbara Bryant worked with Ford as she “directed national research for three presidential commissions” including Ford, working on the 38th President’s Commission on Observance of International Women’s Year (1975-77). It is plausible both she and her husband received copies of Ford’s autobiography in thanks.

Spine of dustjacket lightly sunned, otherwise fine.
