BURCKHARDT (John Lewis).
Travels in Nubia.

A classic of Nile exploration by the famous Swiss traveler John Lewis Burckhardt (1784-1817), who is most well-known for his rediscovery of Petra in present-day Jordan and, as described here, the temples of Abu Simbel in Egypt.

The main body of the work is in three parts: ‘Memoir on the Life and Travels of John Lewis Burckhardt’; ‘Journey along the Banks of the Nile, from Assouan to Mahass, on the Frontiers of Dongola’; and ‘Description of a Journey from Upper Egypt through the Deserts of Nubia to Berber and Suakin, and from thence to Djidda in Arabia.’
