TISSOT (Pierre-François) [ed.]

Trophées des Armées Françaises depuis 1792 jusqu'en 1815.

Six volumes. Seventy engraved plates in two states, outline and finished, each volume with a similar decorative title page. Some foxing, but otherwise very good in contemporary red morocco, elaborately gilt, inner gilt dentelles and tooling to board edges, skilfully rebacked to style. [iv], xcviii, 320; [iv], 484; [iv], 412; [iv], 424; [ii], 357 [directions to the binder], [iv], 472pp. Paris, 1819.

£1,250.00

As well as having the plates in two states, this set is one of those “pour nos souscripteurs seulement” which has the additional ten plates, “…vues de nos entrées dans les capitales étrangères”. In the editor’s Introduction the plates are described as being based on authentic documents and therefore are “… comme des tableaux vivans de nos triomphes.” They were drawn and etched by Couché fils and finished by Bovinet.

OCLC identifies twelve sets, without noting the number of plates, only two of which are in Europe - National Library of Ireland and University of Manchester - KVK locates a further set in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek. Relatively uncommon and this a very attractive set. Bookplate of the Philadelphia Club recording its presentation by Henry Seybert.
