Father Vieira, known as “O Grande”, was the preeminent Portuguese preacher of the 17th century. He fought for the emancipation of the Jews, the abolition of slavery, and was a fierce enemy of the Inquisition. Thus he came into difficulties with official Portuguese politics, was imprisoned and sentenced for heresy. He worked in Brazil for nearly fifty years.
