STOPES (Marie Carmichael).
We Burn. Selected poems.
Inscribed by the author, “To Sir Richard Gregory from the author, with affection & regards. Marie C. Stopes. 1949”. Gregory, astronomer at UCL (where Stopes also taught) and for twenty years editor of Nature, was a supporter of Stopes’ C.B.C., initially launched as the “Society for Constructive Birth Control and Racial Progress”. Understandably many modern historians of the campaign for birth control underplay her enthusiasm for eugenics, though few go the extent of the Abertillery local historian who in an essay on the first hospital contraception clinic (in Abertillery), renamed the Society “… and Radical Progress”. A very good copy, corners slightly stained and bumped.
