The definitive English translation of Nietzsche’s controversial so-called ‘magnum opus’, in fact a posthumously assembled collection of notes drawn from Nietzsche’s literary remains under the editorship of his sister Elizabeth Förster-Nietzsche and friend Peter Gast. The text was originally published in German in 1901 and subsequently significantly revised in 1906, which in turn served as the basis for the first English translation published in 1909, translated by Anthony Ludovici under the editorship of Dr. Oscar Levy. The present Kaufman edition is extremely important for unraveling the various egregious editorial interventions made by Elizabeth Förster-Nietzsche and Peter Gast.
