With issue 5 the magazine changed its name to New Japan Correspondent (Yani Yapon Mohbiri). Muhammed-Gabdulkhay Kurbangaliev (1889—1972) was the chief editor. Born in Russia he was a prominent Bashkir religious leader who had allied himself with the White Russian forces during the civil war. After the defeat of Bashkir troops in 1920 he was forced to emigrate to Manchuria and moved to Japan in 1924. Kurbangaliev maintained strong links with the Imperial Japanese army, he was involved in coordinating military espionage together with the ultra-nationalist Toyama Mitsuru who published a congratulatory letter in the first issue. It would appear that Kurbangaliev had large ambitions: He aspired to become the leader of all Tartar muslims and predictably he had a falling out with the army over this.
