A seemingly unrecorded booklet extolling the virtues of the Five Year Plan, an ambitious industrial and economic reimagining of the Soviet Union, initiated in 1928. Focussing on the communist centralisation and collectivisation of national production, the striking constructivist style cover illustration employs typical motifs of photomontage, associated with artists like Rodchenko and Mayakovsky. The title also touches on a frequently cited propagandistic claim, that the five year plan would be completed in just four years.
The verso of the cover bears the same title translated into German: “Fünf-Jahresplan - Kampfwaffe des Internazionalen Proletariats”. The Five Year Plan was a key feature of Stalinist propaganda, acting as an impressive and palatable export to demonstrate the power of collectivism. A popular Soviet poster of the same year drew on similar design notes with the message “2 + 2 plus workers’ enthusiasm = 5”.
