Lady Herbert’s translation of a work published originally in French. Justin de Jacobis was appointed first Prefect Apostolic of Abyssinia in 1839. He founded a college and seminary at Guala in 1846. The Ethiopian church did not take kindly to this, banning Catholicism and forcing Bishop Massaia to flee back to Rome. Jacobis remained, working underground until such time as he was able to reopen the seminary in 1853. He was subsequently imprisoned in 1860 on the accession of King Theodore II.
